Student wellbeing
At South Wagga Public School, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn.
At South Wagga Public School, we are committed to supporting the wellbeing of every student through a whole-school approach. We work in partnership with The Resilience Project, embedding its evidence-based wellbeing program across all settings to create a positive, connected and supportive school culture. Through explicit lessons and daily practices focused on Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM), students develop the skills needed to build resilience, regulate their emotions, maintain positive relationships and navigate challenges with confidence. By embedding these practices across classrooms, the playground and the broader school community, we support students to thrive both academically and personally.
The Resilience Project in action
At South Wagga Public School, The Resilience Project is embedded across all aspects of school life. Through its evidence-based approach, students develop the skills and habits that support positive mental health, wellbeing and resilience. The core principles of Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM) are woven into our teaching, learning and daily interactions, creating a shared language and culture across the school.
Our commitment to GEM is evident through:
- Weekly explicit The Resilience Project lessons taught in every classroom from Kindergarten to Year 6.
- Consistent GEM language, expectations and practices used across all classes.
- School assembly awards that recognise and celebrate students demonstrating Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness.
- Regular GEM conversations and reflections involving staff, modelling positive wellbeing practices for students.
- The integration of GEM principles into classroom learning, playground interactions and whole-school events.
By embedding The Resilience Project across all settings, we empower students to build resilience, strengthen relationships and develop the wellbeing skills needed to thrive both at school and beyond.
How we support student wellbeing
Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.
We do this through:
- teachers who help students feel welcome and included
- access to specialist staff
- programs that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour
- clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships
- staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
- developing health care plans for students
- open communication about wellbeing and support.
